The Watermelon quilt done

The week went so fast and it has been a week since I last posted.
The Pentecost holiday, family, friends and everyday life have got the best of me.

I have been very busy finishing the Watermelon quilt and I put the last stitches in yesterday. Now it has been washed and is ready to go to my guild's show and tell today :-)
It was my May goal and it is so nice to be done.

The quilting really made this quilt!
I have used a soft silk thread - see the brown spool in the next photo. Thanks to the Clover needle threader it was threadable in the quilting needles too.
I will quilt more Baptist Fans in the future - I really like the shape and the appearance.

The teacher's inspiration was this quilt in American Patchwork & Quilting, Issue 72, February 2005.
Thanks Sigrun for giving me the magazine and thanks Linda J. for telling me about it.
Here you can see the teacher Rie's quilt. Adding a Dear Jane block in the cornerstones really gave the quilt a lift. I used a variation of another block, but the impression is still there.

My friend Val in Canada bought the raspberry red fabric I have used for the binding, which is very like a raspberry red I used in one of the blocks. I searched high and low for this particular colour and have meters of wrong shaded to prove it, shopped from various internet shops. Thanks Val for helping me out :-)

What is next on my to do list you might wonder ?
NI blocks, stitchery, class projects for the autumn. Not a dull day in sight :-)

The finished quilts each have a different name. Does the block itself have a name? I have seen one similar and cannot identify it with my encyclopedia of blocks.

P.S. I meant to tell you how much I have been admiring your work on this quilt and NI.

And some more congratulations on your water melon quilt! You deserve them though. The quilt is wonderful. I love quilting fans as well and the brown thread is an original and good idea. I saw that you got a japanese book translated into french, I love japanese quilting magazines and I am French, so if you have any problem with understanding, let me know! Take care.

It's beautiful Hanne, I love the Baptist fan quilting. I haven't done it by hand (yet) but it's one of my favorite quilting patterns and I plan on using it on my current quilt in progress.

Hanne, congratulations on a beautiful finish. Everything about this quilt is super - the fabric selection, the settings choice, the block choise, the hand quilting. I think your quilt looks much better than the one that inspired it!

Hanne - your watermelon quilt is a real credit to you - your version is so much nicer than the inspiration one in the magazine - I think, in that one, the sashings are way too dominant and detract from the main block - and I love your little tiny DJ cornerstones - well done it will be a pleasure to catch sight of each time you enter the room :o)
